Anemia develops when the blood lacks healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin. The effects in the individual can result in pallor and weariness. Some studies now suggest that pure honey is able to effectively treat the symptoms of anemia.
My Notes:
Out of all the blood disorders, anemia is the most common. In the US, estimates suggest that three million people suffer with the condition each year.
The Causes of Anemia
Anemia occurs whenever the blood lacks in red blood cells. The human body needs these red blood cells to carry out many everyday bodily functions. Without them, nutrients and oxygen cannot get transported around the body and delivered to where they are most needed. When this happens, extreme fatigue usually sets in.
There are 400 different types of anemia and several different causes. These are classified into three groups as follows:
- Anemia caused by blood loss
- Anemia caused by the lack of red cell production in the body
- Anemia caused by the destruction of red blood cells.
The most common type of anemia in modern times is that of iron deficiency.
Treatments for Anemia
To usual way to combat iron deficiency anemia is with a prescription of iron supplements. When taken as suggested, these soon build up healthy red blood cells. The bad news is that iron supplements often come with some unpleasant side effects. The three most common of these side effects are diarrhea, constipation and stomach pain. Iron poisoning can also be a risk factor if the iron consumption is not closely monitored.
The Safer Alternative to Iron Supplements
There is an all-natural, much safer alternative to using iron supplements. That alternative is raw, natural honey. The reason honey works is because it contains essential minerals which aid in hemoglobin production. These are iron, copper, and manganese. In trials, anemia sufferers who took honey on a daily basis reported significant increases in energy levels. Researchers have determined the following points about honey:
- It increases calcium absorption
- Increases hemoglobin count
- Helps to treat or prevent anemia caused by nutritional factors

Summary
Once again honey is coming to the aid of humans, this time for anemia. Like so many of the health benefits of honey, many of the findings are not official or conclusive. That doesn't mean they're unfounded, it just means they're not yet proven by science.
